<p>Proposed Contribution for the Research Committee on International Tourism RC 50, Session No. 2 ‘Global impacts and local positions’, World Congress of Sociology 2010</p>
<p>Abstract</p>
<p>What we intend to outline in this paper is how shifts in the virtual organization of tourism are changing the way backpackers gather information on tourist destinations. A special focus will be on the relations between classic travel guidebooks and currently emerging Web 2.0 applications. We claim that especially new Web 2.0 applications (such as travelblog.org) diversify tastes within the realm of tourism. Web 2.0 is based on technologies, which allow an integration of a variety of tools and applications that are easily accessible, interconnected and interactive. The so far passive user is becoming an active, constitutive and distributive producer, who shares and exchanges information openly and free of charge in order to make knowledge available to all, to collaborate equally, to foster collective intelligence, so that everyone benefits. Every taste can be (potentially) represented, every experience can be (potentially) reintegrated, the opposing forces of authenticity are reassessed, but negotiated. However, the question remains whether centralization exists among the online information sources that backpackers use and consult. For describing and analyzing the current changes taking place in backpackers’ information gathering processes we employ a Grounded Theory approach. The data will be collected via qualitative interviews with backpackers on the Philippines and should shed more light on the following research questions: Is there a shift feasible in the ways information is gathered by backpackers? Is the influence of paper-based guidebooks more and more vanishing? Why do some backpackers share information on the Internet (e.g. blogs) and others don’t? Does the information gathering behaviour differ before and during the trip? In the last fifteen years the Internet has become more and more commercialised and traditional media companies are also dominating the online world. Are Western commercial interests prevailing the way backpackers use the Internet? Are the leading travel books in the offline world (e.g. Lonely Planet) also dominating cyberspace? What are the possible implications of Web 2.0 applications for Philippine tourist destinations? How do local tourism operators react to the ongoing shifts in the virtual organization of tourism? Essentially, our research questions direct us to investigate the information-search/share behaviour of modern backpackers in the 21st century as they are empowered with new ways to do so.</p>

<p>1. Introduction</p>
<p>In this position paper we are trying to formulate a critique of the current practices in ICTs related development assistance. We are arguing that modernization theoretical approaches still serve as an ideological basis for most development activities taken out by industrialised countries. In our opinion, modernization theories are used to legitimise modern imperialism through which a global capitalistic system should be established. In the next section we will give a brief overview on modernization theory. This is followed by a description of the ways ICTs currently are tried to be implemented in the developing world. We will end with some concluding thoughts.</p>
<p>2. Modernization Theoretical Thinking</p>
<p>In the early 1950s development theories started to emerge as an independent academic discipline, with the aim to develop new models in order to face the east-west conflict and to oppose Sowjet development theories. Menzel (1992) differs between sub-disciplines of modernization-theories, i. e. Economy of development, theories of nation-state building, democratization-theories and the tighter modernization theories, which are based on the ‘big theories’ of the 19th century. The main argument was, in opposition to Marxist theories, that intern cultural and mental factors foster underdevelopment of non-industrial societies (Menzel 1992: 21). The focus on intern or engodenous factors function as the basement of the theories of modernization (Menzel 1995: 21; Nuscheler 2005: 214, Wehler 1975: 8). They developed from Max Weber’s “Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus“ (The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism) and the main assumption is a dualism on an economic, technological, regional, social and cultural level. Weber’s sociology of religion describes the interrelation between puritan religion and economic-rational lifestyle in capitalistic ways of thinking. Not the capitalistic system itself developed from ascetic Protestantism, but the rational ‘ghost’ or soul of capitalism, its dynamic and ascetic focus was embossed from Calvinism, in particular from Anglo-Saxon Puritanism (Abramowski 1966: 39).<br />
The main concept of modernization describes the development from traditional to modern societies (Wehler 1975: 11). Following Nuscheler (2005: 214), the background of modernization theories are dualisms between tradition and modernity, between industrial centres and rural areas and between owning and non-owning classes. Due to this approach developing countries navigate in a slower pace, but in the same direction like industrial countries. In opposition to Marxist theories the goal of development is not a classless society, but a modern industrial society (Menzel 1995: 21).<br />
Walt Whitman Rostow (1960) is an important representative of modernization theoretical approaches. His theory of stages of economical growth should offer an alternative to the Marxist development theory (Harrison 1988: 26; Lachmann 2004: 90; Menzel 1995: 22). The foundation of Rostow’s approach is the classification of societies within five steps of development, which he describes as stages of growth. For modernization theories economical growth is the basis of the modernization-process, but also a change of values within the population of a society is required (Wehler 1975: 39). Economical changes have strong impacts on societies and these changes are supported by political and social transformations (Rostow 1960: 17).<br />
The process of modernization can be seen as increasing dominance of humans over their   environment; this progress is inevitable and revolutionary and it emerges in certain stages (Wehler 1975: 16). The first phase is the traditional society, the conditions of production are limited, science and technology barely accessible. This society is based on agriculture and highly hierarchical structures within landowners and families (Rostow 1960: 18).<br />
The next phase can be described as a society in transformation where the preconditions for economical growth are established. The role of science and technology increases, the political system changes towards a strong nation state, which releases from traditional and regional interests and fosters investments in industrial sectors “Investments increase, especially in transport, communication and raw materials, and the result is a general commercial expansion.” (Harrison 1988: 26) This transformation also takes part within the population where the importance of personal property and nationalism increases (Lachmann 2004: 91; Rostow 1960: 47).<br />
The next step is the economical rise, in which the industrial sector gains more and more power and starts to play a dominant role within a given society. Through the import of capital and investments the basement for new industry is laid, new employments are provided, the agricultural sector becomes commercialized, natural resources become capitalized and new methods of production develop (Rostow 1960: 22). For Rostow the precondition for the „Take-off“ is an increasing quote of investments of 10%, but later on, this number will be relativized by certain economic-historians, because i. e. England archived this investment quote long after the industrial revolution (Lachmann 2004: 91).<br />
A society’s stadium of mature according to Rostow is accomplished when the national economy has asserted its position in the international market. He arguments that the process from traditional to mature society takes 60 years, because modern technology needs three generations for an adequate diffusion in a certain society (Rostow 1960: 25). In the following stadium of mass consumption the per-capita income increases towards a level that allows more private consumption than only food and clothing, besides of that, the importance of social welfare increases (Rostow 1960: 94).<br />
The model of Rostow has often been criticized, especially by dependency theories. “In short, far from colonialism helping to modernize the Third World, it served to hinder its development.” (Harrison 1988: 28). Most modernization theories describe the development process of societies as an evolutionary progress. Rostow’s model still is the foundation of many development theories, such as Parsons Neo-Evolutionism (Lachmann 2004: 92; Harrison 1988: 41).<br />
The common ground of most modernization theories is the characterization of modern society as the „better society“, the way from tradition to modernity is the only way and should be aspired globally by all societies. Some modernization theories reflect the ethno-centric self-approval and the political and economical superiority of the US after 1945 (Wehler 1975: 18). The lack of considering problems made by international politics, imperialism, colonial regimes and war, can also be criticized on modernization theories (Wehler 1975: 55).<br />
Due to modernization theories the main goal of development politics and development aid is the dissociation from traditional paradigm and stimulation of the industry. Apparent economical growth of traditional societies, the so-called Asian tigers are contradictory to these approaches (Nuscheler 2005: 214). The most important strategies of development politics within modernization theories are economical growth and modernization, once capitalism has conquered tradition, society also profits on a social level. According to Wehler (1975: 19) also Social Darwinism or racist approaches can be found within modernization theories, hidden under an intellectual imperialism that characterizes Western lifestyles as the better way to live.<br />
To describe the level of development of a nation, modernization theories focus on internal belongings. Values within societies will have to change from traditional agricultural lifestyle towards mass consumption. The nation state has to enforce foreign investments and foster the enlargement of private property and means of production. Most of the approaches are founded in dualistic mindsets that neglect the possibility of coexistence and cooperation between tradition and modernity. Economical growth is seen as the only driving force for enhancing the living conditions of people in developing countries.</p>
<p>3. A Critic on Modernization Theoretical Thinking</p>
<p>In the light of modernization theoretical approaches, development is considered to be a linear, evolutionary process with a determined final goal. The current social, political, ecological, technical and foremost economical conditions of the developed world are therefore considered to be the only desirable aims of societies. Development in that sense starts at a point ‘A’ in time and ends at an undoubtedly defined point ‘B’ in the future. The whole development process is clearly structured and foreseen, derived from lessons learned in the already developed world, totally neglecting that human history is not a continuing linear progression, it is rather “made of the coexistence and interaction of different states so that the resulting movement looks more like a complex spiral” (Menou 2008). Modernization theoretical approaches also ignore the fact that within countries different stages of development can be witnessed and that even in the developed countries various stages coexist. In global cities such as Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai and even New York one can easily switch between the information age in which e.g. WiFi services  are ubiquitous and the beginning of industrialization where electricity and running water are scared resources.<br />
Ahistoric arguments such as the thesis that modern capitalism and political freedom are shaping each other and hence neoliberal capitalism enhances freedom and vice versa (this was the fundamental principle of US foreign policy under George W. Bush), or that once a capitalistic system is introduced in an developing country wealth will be distributed equally, are used to support this reductionistic approach. Or, as Wallerstein summarizes such hegemonic thinking: &#8220;Development, as the term came to be used after 1945, was based on a familiar explanatory mechanism, a theory of stages. Those who used this concept were assuming that the separate units &#8211; &#8216;national-societies&#8217; &#8211; all developed in the same fundamental way (thus satisfying the nomothetic demand) but in distinct paces (thus acknowledged how different the states seemed to be at the present time). Presto! On would then be able to introduce specific concepts to study the &#8216;others&#8217; at the present time while arguing that eventually, all states would turn out more or less the same. This sleight of hand had a practical side as well. It meant that the &#8216;most-developed&#8217; state could offer itself as a model for the &#8216;less-developed&#8217; states, urging the latter to engage in s sort of mimicry, and promising an higher standard of living and a more liberal governmental structure (&#8216;political development&#8217;) at the end of the rainbow.“ (Wallerstein 2004: 10)<br />
An analysis by Christian Fuchs shows that huge gaps in wealth distribution are characteristic for contemporary societies and therefore, instead of an egalitarian information society, a capitalist class system within informational capitalism is emerging (Fuchs 2008).<br />
Taking Saudi Arabia, a country where women are barred from driving motorised vehicles, as an example, it is getting obvious that democracy and equal rights for all in a Western sense is not necessarily connected to development.<br />
Development takes place in countries where, following modernization theoretical ideas, development seems to be impossible. States like Saudi Arabia, which is on the basis of the GDP &#8211; per capita (PPP) the 60 richest country in the world (CIA World Fact Book 2009), demonstrate that such approaches totally fail in predicting development.  The country demonstrates the importance of external factors for development, e.g. the exploration of oil fields, the existence of row materials, which might become important in future technological innovations and also natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes etc., which are neglected in modernization theories. The same applies for internal factors. Modernization theories fall short in describing for example spontaneous self-organised civil unrests, like the ones e.g. in Iran and Zimbabwe, which can have a fundamental impact on a society and can therefore lead to unforeseen leaps in societal evolutions.</p>
<p>4. Implications for ICTs in Development</p>
<p>The above outlined modernization theoretical way of thinking serves as an ideological basis for strategies of neo-liberal IT-development politics, purely focused on economic benefit resulting out of competition. The idea behind it is that economic development based on free, deregulated markets will automatically lead to societal progress and wealth for all. Developing countries should adopt the Western economic system, monitored by institutions such as the World Bank, which includes large privatisation activities. This approach actually does not support developing countries on their way to an inclusive information society, in contrary, it favours and strengthens Western economic and cultural hegemony. Braga et al. for example state in a position paper for the World Bank that “(…) the challenges are substantial. The possibility that the gap already existing between the front-runners of the networking revolution (mostly high-income economies) and those lagging behind (mostly low-income countries) may still grow larger, raises the spectre of a ‘digital divide’. The concern here is not restricted to the issue of connectivity per se; it also includes the implications of connectivity (or lack of it) for economic growth and the broader agenda of sustainable development. The danger faced by all is that digital divide may reinforce patterns of divergence both internationally and within countries”. The authors also stress the “digital opportunities”, which go side by side with the challenges for developing countries, when they point out that developing countries “(…) can scientifically benefit from investments in modern information infrastructure in a pro-competitive regulatory environment, and leapfrog stages of development in terms of networking roll-out” (Braga et al. 2000: 1-2). One can clearly see the modernization theoretical idea behind it: “leapfrog stages of development” refers to the assumption that development follows a one-dimensional, determent line, from divers traditional societies towards Western streamlined modern, capitalistic societies. A similar example of this sort can be seen in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). In the first sentence of their vision statement for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) it is stated: “The Programme for the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS) and emergency telecommunications will be valued for its quality and timely service aimed at integrating LDCs and SIDS into the world economy through information and communication technologies (ICT) […]” (ITU 2009).<br />
The latest catchword in this context is ‘public-private partnership’. Non-governmental organisations  (NGOs) more and more create joint ventures with partners from the private sector. Various public-private partnership projects, for example UNESCO currently cooperates with Google and Microsoft, again illustrate modernization theoretical ideas. UNESCO, who launched an open-software project sponsored by Microsoft in 2004, legitimises such co-operations in the following way: “These partnerships serve to illustrate the close link between sustainable development and the creation of wealth through commercial activity.“ (UNESCO 2009) Companies like Google and Microsoft have so far not been known that well for open- and free-software and therefore one might wonder about the underlying reasons. The developing world will become a huge IT market in the next years and the key players in the global technostructure would probably not relinquish it to initiatives such as Negroponte’s One Laptop per Child project and therefore it might be possible that Western companies use such co-operations to prepare the market entry to sell their already existing products, which are based on patterns of use prevalent in (post)-industrialised countries. Michel J. Menou (2008) concludes on public-private partnerships that “step by step public interest and common goods are sacrificed to the alleged efficiency of private sector ventures”.<br />
Since external and internal factors are hardly predictable, modernization theories furthermore neglect that it is uncertain how the technology will be used (for different examples see Bichler, 2007; 2008a; 2008b; 2008c). A good example for the internal configuration of technology use due to changing societal circumstances can be found in Kenya where a mobile banking transaction system became popular during the civil unrests in 2007. During that time, when traditional channels for the movement of money, e.g. sending money via friends and family on a bus, were cut off, this service became a tool for the maintenance of urban-rural relations (Morawczynski 2008: 110) She concludes: “The M-PESA application is being widely adopted by low-income migrants for the transfer of remittances between urban and rural areas, and becoming a substitute for many of the other money transfer services.” (Morawczynski 2008: 122)</p>
<p>5. Concluding Thoughts</p>
<p>In this position paper we have tried to highlight the shortcomings associated with modernization theoretical thinking in ICT based development assistance. In our opinion the main deficit of such approaches is the lack of any useful description why development should constitute this way. Modernization theories reflect the ethno-centric self-approval and the political and economical superiority of Western (post)-industrialised countries. Such approaches are focusing solely on economic development based on free, deregulated markets. Following such an understanding, the Western world acts as a role model for developing countries through which hegemonic politics with the goal to introduce a neoliberal economic system on a global scale in favour of Western companies are justified. For further research we propose the following working hypotheses:<br />
➢    When development assistance continues to be taken out in modernization theoretical ways, the economic dependency of developing countries will increase.<br />
➢    The more Western companies get involved in ICT based development assistance, the more it is unlikely that developing countries start building their own technological capacities.<br />
➢    When the dominance of Western online content, along with the propagation of the Western life style concerning different spheres of life, continues, the opposing forces against Western cultural hegemony in developing countries will rise.</p>

<p>Traditionally, there has been a distinction between applied sciences and basic sciences which – so is a widely shared believe – is getting blurred now. The image of an engineer employed in a private lab and taking orders from his employer that is in sharp contrast to the image of an academic just satisfying his curiosity is said to be old-fashioned and outdated. It is true that scientists enjoy a freedom of research within given financial, policy and other constraints. But this is rather due to the fact that research and development starting with the last quarter of the last century have been streamlined world-wide according to neoliberal economic policies of liberalisation, privatisation, and deregulation than to the general statement that science at any time is part of society and thus responsive, be it in a direct or an indirect manner, to historically developing societal needs. Otherwise one could not explain why in developed and thus rich countries many disciplines, in particular,  in humanities, are publicly stigmatised beautiful but useless and suffer cuts and total suspensions. It is the short-sighted economic interest that has been taken command in scientific affairs and this neolibral paradigm is exported into the rest of the world. Via public and private transnational funding agencies, such as e.g. the European Research Framework Programme or The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,  a neoliberal streamlining of science more and more takes place on a global scale with the hegemonic goal to create a global economic output oriented understanding of research and development. Instrumental reason therefore serves as the basic worldview that underlies research and funding policies. Science and research are undergoing a colonialization process in which instrumental rationality spills from the economic sub-system over to other areas of life and “achieves dominance there at the expense of moral-practical and aesthetical-practical rationality” (Habermas 1987: 304). Lenin argued that under imperialism, big companies dominate the economy and that capital struggles “for the sources of raw materials, for the export of capital,  for ‘spheres of influence,’ i.e., for spheres of good business, concessions, monopolist profits, and so on; in fine, for economic territory in general” (Lenin 1917: 266). Lenin failed in his assumption that such a form of imperialism is the highest stage of capitalism. As one can witness today, capital also achieves dominance in the area of intellectual work,  which is transformed into exploitable intellectual capital. We are observing a shift from industrial capitalism towards informational capitalism or,  in terms of the European Union,  towards a ”knowledge economy“. “The 7th Framework Programme is conceived to become the backbone in the construction of a European knowledge economy“ (Commission of the European Communities 2006: 17). For the EU, the industry is the main driving force for innovations: “The 7th Framework Programme is tailored to better meet industry’s needs. (&#8230;) Actions to support research for SMEs carried out by universities and research centres will be scaled up significantly. (&#8230;) Large initiatives of industrial and technological research at European scale will be launched in a selected number of areas of particular relevance for the EU. In addition, industry participation in all funding schemes will be encouraged and special attention will also be made to encourage industry to more actively contribute to the Networks of Excellence“ (Commission of the European Communities 2006: 8).<br />
Thus it makes still sense to distinguish between business-driven development of science and technology and l’art pour l’art activities.</p>
<p>Given the confines of economic profitability and competitiveness,  the credo of technocracy is in force that runs “realise everything that is feasible”. Thereby it is falsely presupposed that everything feasible (again, taken for granted it is economically reasonable) is desirable too and hence a reflective, theoretical deliberation of norms, values, morals is not needed or,  at best, is replaced by a posteriori, empirical inquiries about the acceptance of technology by users. The idea that empiricism should replace basic, theoretical research is more and more gaining ground and manifests in the way research proposals are set up, as well as in the criteria for acceptance in renowned scientific journals. In fact, this detracts from taking into account problems that are more fundamental than those of rentability. However,, the current financial crisis that brought about the current economic crisis does question the current neoliberal system and its belief in the free market. In doing so, it makes the quest for a “good society” topical. And indeed, the attention that is given to the issue of a “good society” has recently been rising. Suffice to mention that,  in the political field, ten years after Tony Blair and Gerhard Schröder produced their declaration of the European “third way” in June 1999, British and German Social Democrats invite to a debate on “Building the Good Society” in Europe (Cruddas/Nahles 2009), or that,  in the academic field,  there is a trend to base good life research issues being investigated in connection with technologies more and more upon considerations of what is the good society – in that vein, e.g., the director of the European Division of the International Association of Computing and Philosophy,  Philip Brey,  had his talk at the Seventh European Conference on Computing and Philosophy 2009 on “The Proper Role of Information Technology in a Good Society“.  We consider bringing this topic on the agenda of the scientific as well as the political debate as a first positive signal and we have the impression that there has been growing awareness that technological and economical determinism are too myopic. The belief in technological progress, which per se entails social progress, seems slowly vanishing.</p>
<p>In our vision,  the “good society” must serve as point of departure. A good society,  given the global challenges, can be defined as a society that is<br />
➢    capable of making use of knowledge<br />
➢    for fighting the dangers of breakdown due to anthropogenic causes<br />
➢    on a global scale.<br />
Thus we get (1) informationality, (2) sustainability, and (3) globality as essentials for a good society which then might be termed Global Sustainable Information Society (Hofkirchner et al. 2007).</p>
<p>That is, we suggest the most universal value to be met by a good society be sustainability that denotes a society’s ability to perpetuate its own development. Sustainability in that senses is conceived as a complex phenomenon, which includes various aspects that need to be achieved in a Gobal Sustainable Information Society (GESIS), such as individual well-being,  security, freedom, and self-determination just like collective dimensions such as wealth for all, social security for all, political participation for all,  or health and education for all (cf. Fuchs/Blachfellner/Bichler 2007: 304).</p>
<p>To make this more concrete, we suggest that the notion of sustainability should be broken down into<br />
➢    a social part, called social compatibility, which is inclusiveness and fairness – to be broken down, in turn,  into<br />
•    equality in cultural terms,<br />
•    political freedom and<br />
•    solidarity as to economy –,<br />
➢    an ecological part, called environmental compatibility, and<br />
➢    a technological part, called technological compatibility, by which we mean a balanced relationship of new with old technologies – to be broken down, again, into usefulness, usability, efficiency, reliability, security, safety and other values.</p>
<p>This approach is normative but doing justice to the factual at the same time. For it includes not only an account of the potential that is given with the actual but also an evaluation of the potential which sorts out the desired. Thus ICTs and Society in the perspective of the GSIS vision embraces an ascendence from the potential given now to the actual to be established in the future as well as an ascendence from the less good now to the better then which altogether yields the Not-Yet in critical theorist Ernst Bloch’s sense (1967). It identifies facilitators and inhibitors of a good society.</p>
<p>The vision of the GSIS does not orient towards a utopian “nowhere” but searches for real possibilities, that are,  possibilities that are anchored in reality. They are concrete and demonstrate that the search for a good society, that is,  a better society is not in vain. Those realised possibilities can be envisioned as the foreshadowing of the better society.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that it is only a vision of the good society like the GSIS that gives reason to technological developments that are senseless in themselves unless coupled to humane values which makes them a means to an end. Without such an end they would be meaningless.<br />
Current societies are based on many contradictions, e.g. between self-determination and heteronomy, or inclusion and exclusion. Technological applications foster cooperation and competition for rationalising the accumulation of economic,  political and cultural capital. In the information society,  or “informational capitalism”, social systems and structures are increasingly shaped by knowledge and ICTs (Bichler/Fuchs/Raffl 2008: 158). Technology does not follow predictable,  mechanically determined and one-sided effects,  but a set of multiple antagonistic economic, political,  and cultural tendencies, and therefore cause both, opportunities and risks at the same time.<br />
Therefore, technological applications are to be questioned, and the question is: are they apt to serve the purpose of a GSIS? Actually, the process of design is to start with identifying a societal problem and to be continued with the search for appropriate applications (and not the other way round as is done under technocratic premises). These applications must be continuously evaluated and,  if needed, adopted to changing societal circumstances and demands. A never-ending circle of human centred design – evaluation – re-design,  always based on societal problems and needs,  is central to lay the basis for a GESIS, which is not following the neoliberal economic imperative.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>ein kurzfristiger österreichausflug eröffnete mir die möglichkeit dem ersatzkonzerttermin von <em>a life a song a cigarette</em> am 23. oktober in der salzburger <em>arge</em> beizuwohnen. der ursprüngliche konzerttermin musste aufgrund erkrankter bandmitglieder vom sänger stephan stanzel alleine bestritten werden. dieser fast schon legendäre auftritt am 21. jänner 2009, welcher für den frontmann der combo in den frühen morgenstunden in der christian doppler klinik endete, und das im österreichischen kontext wohl schwer einen angemessenen vergleich findende zweite album <em>black air</em>, machten trotz meiner sehr limitierten zeit dieses konzert zu einem must-see. die nach dem jänner termin aufgetauchte frage, ob stanzel nur im studio gesanglich zu  überzeugen vermag, oder ob er doch auch live im stande ist das publikum mitzureißen, sollte für mich dabei beantwortet werden. der erste versuch ließ leider auch eher auf ersteres schließen.<br />
kurz nach 23:00, für salzburger verhältnisse also eigentlich schon weit nach mitternacht, war es dann soweit; stephan stanzel, begleitet von seiner band und mit starken anleihen an pete doherty ausgestattet, betrat die bühne im roten salon. nach den ersten nummern wurde, zumindest für mich, klar, dass der soloauftritt im jänner in der kategorie ausrutscher zu verorten ist. die gesanglichen und musikalischen unterschiede zwischen den album- und den live-versionen von <em>black air </em>erschienen marginal. für mich überraschend war auch die äußerst aktive performance der musiker, die sich aber sehr harmonisch in die oft dunkle a <em>life a song a cigarette</em>-klangwelt einfügte. Der eher dem segment deprie-rock angehörende sound entpuppte sich in der live performance als über einzelne strecken durchaus tanzbar und spätestens bei den zugaben, bei denen der am boden liegende violoncellist sein instrument mit dem bogen zu zersägen schien, wurde das sonst eher zurückhaltende salzburger publikum aus seinem obligatorischen halbkoma gerissen.<br />
die gut aufeinander abgestimmte songauswahl gepaart mit selbstironischen bemerkungen von stephan stanzel zu seinem letzten konzertversuch in salzburg hinterließen im ausverkauften roten salon die bestätigung: es gibt sehr gute musik aus österreich.<br />
der zweite teil der zugaben, der von stanzel alleine und unplugged inmitten des publikums bestritten wurde, überspannte allerdings den avantgardistischen bogen der salzburger musikinteressierten. der sänger forderte zu musikwünschen auf und versuchte das publikum zum mitsingen zu animieren; gedankt wurde es ihm mit einem konstanten ausdünnen des konzertsaals. manche dinge ändern sich dann wohl doch nicht.</p>
